Frequently Asked Questions
Why are electrolytes so important?
You probably already know that GLP-1 medications suppress appetite, but did you know that they are known to suppress thirst too?
Dehydration makes nausea and vomiting—the most common GLP-1 side effects—worse. GLP-1 medications already slow down your digestive system, and dehydration can make this gastric emptying process even slower, leading to worse side effects.
And if you happen to be one of the 5-10% of users struggling with diarrhea or vomiting on your medication, you’ll need to replenish your fluids even more rapidly. Thankfully, prioritizing fluid intake (and supplementing with electrolytes) can help.
Our electrolyte powder is the only one that is designed specifically for GLP-1 users, and is enhanced with vitamin B6 for nausea.
What makes this electrolyte different?
The main difference between our electrolyte powder and others is that ours was designed specifically for GLP-1 users!
Did you know GLP-1 medication users are more sensitive to sugar and sweet flavors? That's why this electrolyte powder was made with natural ingredients and nothing artificial. You'll be hooked from the first sip!
We also enhanced this powder with vitamin B6 for nausea; something you won't find in most other electrolyte powders.
Others
- Taste artificial, overly sweet
- Too much salt
- Does nothing to specifically address the needs of GLP-1 users
SoWell Electrolytes
- Extremely natural, subtle flavor
- Just the right amount of electrolytes for daily use
- Enhanced with vitamin B6 for nausea
What research went into developing SoWell Electrolytes?
A lot! Our founder, Dr. Alexandra Sowa, has clinical experience working with GLP-1 users for a decade.
This product was created using her clinical experience and all available research on GLP-1 medications.
If you really want to nerd out, you can read some of the clinical papers that went into our research process here:
- “Nausea is believed to arise from direct effects on the central nervous system, mediated by GLP-1 receptors in the area postrema. Effects on GI function, such as delayed gastric emptying (primarily with short-acting agents) and alterations in intestinal motility and transit time, may also contribute to the occurrence of GI side effects.” Managing the gastrointestinal side effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists in obesity: recommendations for clinical practice
- “Individuals being treated with GLP-1R agonists are prone to reduced water intake. This is particularly concerning because the majority of individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, and therefore potentially treated with GLP-1R agonists, are over the age of 45 and are already at an increased risk for dehydration. Thus, the already common instances of fluid imbalance are potentially exacerbated by a common treatment for diabetes mellitus and obesity.”The role of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in fluid and food intakes in vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro rats
- “For patients with vomiting, maintaining hydration is important and patients should be advised accordingly. Dietary measures, such as smaller volumes of food intake, possibly more frequently if needed, may also be helpful.” Managing the gastrointestinal side effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists in obesity: recommendations for clinical practice
- Dehydration exercise resulted in slower gastric emptying than in all other treatments. ANOVA revealed significant effects of dehydration (P less than 0.05) and exercise (P less than 0.05), these two effects being additive in delaying gastric emptying. Effects of dehydration on gastric emptying and gastrointestinal distress while running
- “Both water and sodium need to be replaced to re-establish "normal" total body water (euhydration).” Fluid and electrolyte needs for training, competition, and recovery
- “At the completion of 3 days of therapy, only eight of 31 patients in the vitamin B6 group had any vomiting, compared with 15 of 28 patients in the placebo group (P less than .05)” Vitamin B6 is effective therapy for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy: a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study
- "Our findings build upon preliminary animal studies showing that central administration of GLP-1RA medications impacts taste aversion to sweetness," Jensterle Sever said.’ Weight loss drug may change how obese people perceive taste
When should I take my electrolytes?
You can take SoWell Electrolytes anytime, but we recommend taking them in the morning to start your day on the right food and prevent nausea as much as possible.
What if I'm not on a GLP-1?
While this product is designed for GLP-1 users, it's clean, safe, and beneficial for everyone to enjoy!
It may be especially helpful for anyone who is trying to limit carbs and sugar while reaping the benefits of supplementing with an electrolyte.
Also, if you hate the taste of other electrolyte powders, you should give this one a try! (It's delicious.)
